POLITICAL NEWS.
A representative deputation of electors of the new Dunedin Central parliamentary electorate waited upon Mr A. S. Adams on Wednesday morning at his office, and requested him to allow himself to be nominated as a candidate for the Dunedin Central seat at the approaching election. After some discussion Mr Adams definitely agreed to the request. It was decided to call a meeting on Friday evening of friends and supporters who would be prepared to support Mr Adams's campaign.
Mr E ff. Ward, of Milton, informs the Free Press. Baleiutha, t<hat he has definitely decided to contest the Bruce seat at the forthcoming general election as a supporter of the present Administration. Mr Wai*d is a young man of 23. From the platform he intends to advance the following principles: — (1) Completion of all unfinished railway lines a.s soon as possible. (2) The establishment of a State bank, thereby saving an enoimous amount of public money at present paid away in exchange, etc. (3) The desirability of maintaining the present Ministry in office. It is considered more than probable (cays the Clutha Leader) that Air D. Stewart will be the Government candidate for Clutha at the next general election. Mr Oswald Gardner. flaxmiller and farmeir, of Paiaka, has announced his intention of contesting the Manawatu seat at the general election. It is understood that he will stand as an Independent, with a leaning towards the Liberal party. A requisition is in oirculaton askng Mr John Handley to allow hmself to be nominated for the Wanganui seat at the coming election.
Mr A. S. Malcolm, teacher, of Kelso, is definite". v in the field as a candidate for tho Ciutha seat.
A Woodville telegram states that, in response to a requisition presented to him, Mr Duncan Buchanan, sheep-farmer, has consented to contest the Pahiatua seat in the Liberal intcrcet. Tli© Palmerston Times understands that a requisition to Mr T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., aeking him to reconsider his decision not to be a candidate for the Waikouaiti seat at the next general election is being largely signed in the Waikouaiti district. A requisition in similar terms is being signed at Shag Point. The paper also understands that the Government candidate for the Waikouaiti seat will be selected at a meeting of delegates from the various centres in the electorate, to be held in Palmeirston on Wednesday, 21st inst. It is generally understood that three candidates — viz., Messrs E. H. Ciark (Mayor of Palmerston), D. M. Findlay (Wellington). W Nicolson (Mayor of Hampden) — aie willing to enter the lists in the interests of the Liberal party. In the event of Mr Mackenzie adhering to his decision to retire from politics, it is more than probable that Mr D. M. Philip, of Dunbaek, will contest the Waikouaiti seat in the Opposition interests.
The Socialist party in Wellington has decided to contest a seat at the forthcoming Parliamentary election, and Mr Robert Hoga; is to be invited to etand as the candidate. Mr Hogg has not very long arrived from Home, where he tcok a prominent part in the Independent Labour party. He has been engaged in lecturing on socialism ,and is an ardent advocate of State control of the liquor traffic. Mr W. Frank Fitt announces that he will be a candidate for the Parnell electorate at the forthcoming general election. A requisition is being circulated for signature, asking Mr F. J. Rolleston, a member of the Timaru legal firm of Tripp and Rnlleston, to contest the Timaru scat against the Hon. W. Hall-Jones at the general election this year. Mr D. Sykes, who decided some time ago to bo a candidate to represent Courtenay, has announced that he has retired in favour of Mr C. H. A. T. Opie, so as not to split the Liberal vote.
