(b) Here the American authority prefers Q Kt-Q 2.
(c) It is rather early for this move. Probably the development of the Queen's side by P-Kt 3 and B-Kt 2is sounder play. "
(d) A bold and rather dangerous effort to win a pawn.
(c) This looks like a mistake, as there is no immediate prospect of recovering the pawn thus sacrificed.
(f) Q x R deserves consideration, as White should get a good attack on the King with his rooks and bishop.
(g) An unnecessary exchange, as Black should be first with the attack after P-Kt 3.
(h) A pretty combination which wins, for if Black declines the pawn White plays P-Q 6 at once.

A lively Allgaier Gambit played between H. W. Trenchard (White) and P. S. Leonhardt (Black) at the top board in a recent match between the Metropolitan and North London Clubs: — White. Black. White. (a) An obsolete defence, recommended by Ponziani, 1782— inferior to P-K R 3.
(b) P-Q 4 would have been & promising line of play now. (c) Staunton in his handbook demonstrates the inferiority of Q x P. (d) It seems a mistake to leave the queen on the diagonal behind the X B P. Even Kt-K 2 at once would have been better than the move played. (c) Now White gets it all his own way. (f) The City of London champion is for once caugfat napping, and he falls into a simple mate in two!
