A monster meeting held on Monday expressed disappointment that the pledges to I I connect Nelson with the other centres of the . ! island had been broken, and called on the i Government to re-deem those pledges. Many !of those present had travelled long dis- \ tances, and the resolutions were carrkfd ! with enthusiasm. It was shown that a line through to Buller would open considerably over one million acres of valuable land there being considerably more than three million acres still held by the Crown in thedistrict, and the timber and coal and other minerals were of very considerable value, in addition to the agricultural and pastoral capabilities. Some speakers pointed out that but for the abolition of the provinces the line would have been made long ago, and opinions were expressed that the line urged would prove more profitable to the> colony than any others now under construction, j
