The Clutha Leader understand* that the Clutha Mounted Rifles sare entitled to " colours " bearing t*he words " South Africa, 1900. 1901, 1902," they having had 20 men or more who went to the front.
A rara, avis in the form of a hawk whose plumage on th* back is almost pure white, with a slight admixture of very lighi brown, and the breaat light brown or dull red, was shot at Lumeden by Mr R. Vent. It possessed an exceptional spread of wing — *ft 6in from tip to tip,— and was of greater weight than the- average. The owner intends to nave~the bird preserved. The Wellington Acclimatisation Society at this meeting on Thursday night resolved that the incoming committee should make vigorous efforts to stook the Tararua Range with deer. According to the Eketahuna Express the fiv« deer liberated on th© foot of the Tararua Ranges, beyond Eketahuna, ar* making splendid progress. They are frequently seen by settlers, the whole five being observed the other day on the bank of the Mangatainoka River, near where they were liberated.
Th© Clutha Leader states that 10 Canadian geese, recently imported, are being cared for at the Clinton hatchery, and the intention is to try and breed from them and liberate the progeny.
