RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB WINTEID MEETING.

The winter meeting of the Uunedin Jockey Club was commenced on Saturday in veryfine thoug'i bitterly cold weather, but by thetime the last race started snow had began to fall. In vievr cf the weather being so wintry, naturally there was a falling off in the attendance, and a corresponding shrinkage in the totalisator investments. Even had the course been much closer to town than Wingatui it is very doubtfu" if the attendance would have been any less meagre with the weather prevailing on Saturday. Among the visiting owners were Sir George Clifford, Mr M'Lean, Mr J. F. Buchanan, Mr O. R. Wise (Oa-maru), Mr W. T. Hazlett. and Mr J. R. Mackenzie. Mr St. John Buckley, whose horses won the two principal events on the caird, was not present to see his colours carried to the front. As before mentioned, there was a falling off in totalisator investments, the margin between the money handled the first day of last year's winter meeting and the first day of this being represented by the large sum of £1209 10s. The figures for last year were £5077, and for this £3867 10s. The officials were all in their places,, and performed their duties in the customary conscientious and painstaking manner that is always closely identified with tha doings of the club. The catering -was in the hands of Mrs Beataon, who certainly provided » very good luncheon. The Kaikorai Band must have had a cold time of it playing out on the lawn. Its programme was a, good one, and contained a great deal of popular music. The track, it should be mentioned, was very heavy and holding.

All the acceptors went out for the Hurdles, and The Guesser and Noxious Weed singled themselves out and ran clean away from the> others until turning for home, when Wonderful appeared upon the scene. In the run home* the rider of 'Wonderful appeared to be very confident of his mount, and without making any apparent effort on his horse got up in time to win Bill Perkins, who was sold lasfr week at Oamaru during the currency of th» local meeting for £12, won the Brighton Hacle from the highly-fancied Cnirosettia after a. good race, in which the first five horses were* in close order when the post was reached. Th» only withdrawal from the Birthday Handicap was Red Gauntlet. The field got away from* a splendid start, which marked one of Mr Piper's best efforts on the course. Canni© Cbiel was prominent in the early stages) and looking over the field it was noticed that Calibre did not appear to be acting tooi generously in the first part of the race. The lightly-weighted Beau Seaton took command at the far turn, and, stalling off a challenge from Calibre, won by a neck; Cannie Chiel, who died away when the straight was reached 1 , about four lengths away. Vladimir, the top> weight, was handy to the leaders af the horns turn, but failed to become prominent in the run home. Blvtheraaid was always prominent in the Trial Plate, and won with a bit ta spare after stalling off Cathron at the finish ; whilst Rubrette, who had sported silk earlier in the day, cave with a good run at the finish, and gained the almost barren honours of third place from Cavatina. In the Tradesmen's Handicap an excellent and interesting racft was witnessed. Master Alix was first to break the line, but was almost immediately steadied, and Bluestone tpok command before reaching the far turn, with Red Gauntlet and Ailsa as his olosest attendants. Ailsa took commana aft the home turn, and locked all over a winner, but failed to stall off Master Alix's challenge* inside the distance. Master Alix- came with a good and well-sustained mn in the straight, and appeared to win comfortably; whilst* Petrovna, who had been lying in the rear until well on for the straight, put in. a brilliant run in the last furlong and gained third place. In the Saddle Hill TVelter, in which. Bill Perkins was prominent in the early stage, Somaroff was always up with the leaders, and appeared to win at the finish with a bit in baud. Dcnna Rosa kept the lead in th*
