THE FISCAL QUESTION.
MR BALFOUR AND THE RADICALS.
LONDON, May 29.
Mr Balfour, in a letter in connection with the Whitby election, says: — "I am not surprised the Radical candidate is a supporter of Home Rule. The Radicals twice tried to dismember the United Kingdom. Regarding the misrepresentation about the big and little loaf and a return to the days of dear food, the Radicals are blindly indifferent to the modern conditions of commerce and the true ideals of Empire. They resort to most unscrupulous appeals and groundless fears. If a policy^ of fiscal reform were to result in restoring the conditions of life among the workers prevailing before 1850 it would lave no more vehement opponent than myself. When I recollect how much our prosperity depends upon markets for our exports and how much our greatness upon binding closer the various parts of the Empire, I wonder that even party passion makes opponents so reckless in dealing with great national interests."
