EDUCATIONAL STATISTIC?.

The quarterly returns of attendance for the period ended 31st March. 1905, which have been compiled by the secretary of the Education Board, sriow that there were 220 schools in operation in this district, employing 209 male and 510 female teachers. The number of pupils on the roll at the beginning of the quarter was 18,116 and at the end of the quarter 19.553, comprising 10,172 boys and 9481 girls. Tho average attendance was 9071 boys and 8479 girls, making a total of 17.550. being 36 more than the total ior the previous quarter and 109 more than that for the Maich quarter of 1904. The- numbpr of pupils admitted during the quarter w<is 2326.

The averages at the city and suburban schools for the March quarter were ■ Kaikorai, 672 ; Forbury. 615 ; Caverohain, 535; Union Street. 534; Arthur Street, 504- ; North-East Va-ley. 169; Macandrew Koad, 4-18: Normal. 415; Mornington, 409: Kensington, 258; Ravensbourne, 168; St. Clair, 128; Anderson's Bay. 121: Wakari, 77; Leith "Valley, 40. The averages at Oamaru wore: South School. 329: North, 316; Middle, 266. At the District High Schools: Port Chalmers, 426; Balclutlia. 289; Lawrence, 267; Mo'gie], 263: Tokomairiro. 240: Palmerston, 218: Tapanui. 169: Na&oby. 166; Hamnden. 113. Tho .school at Be-ndigo wa^s closed during the quarter.
