THANKS

Mr A. Siligo, in the course of some appropriate remarks, said that no matter how good a Government might be there came a time, perhaps, when it had lasted too long, when daylight should be let into the corners and the charwoman set to work. He did not hesitate to say the existing Government had done a great deal for the colony, but that would not at all prevent some other Government doing a great deal for the colony in the future. They had been glad of the opportunity of hearing Mr Massey, and were indebted to him for coming, and he had great pleasure in asking that there be accorded Mr Massey a hearty vote of thanks for his address and presence that evening. — (Applause.)

Mr A. D. -Aitken seconded the motion. If Mr Massey had done nothing more than to awaken an intelligent interest in the political questions of the day his mission voukl have been a success in Dunedin.— (Applause.)

The Mayor apparently took the applause following the seconder's remarks as indicative of the meeting's support of J he motion, and, without formally putting the motion to 'the meeting, he mtimated to Mr Massey that the vote of thanks had been carried.

Mr Massey, on coming forward to return thanks, was very warmly received. He said he heartily appreciated the manner in which the audience had carried the vote. It had been a pleasure to him to address the citizens of Dunedin, and he hoped he would have another opportunity at no distant date of addressing a meeting, perhaps in that very building. — (Applause.)

A vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding closed the meeting.
