RACING IN NEW ZEALAND

TAIERI AMATEUR TURF CLUB

The Taieri Amateur Turf Club held its annual meeting on the Mosgiel Park Racecourse on Monday. The weather in the early part of the day was splendid, but a heavy shower fell about 4 o'clock. The attendance of the public was large. The arrangements for the meeting were very good. The stand was largely patronised throughout the day The starting was in the capable hands of Mr W. A. Tumbull, Mr John Fleming acted as judge^ Mr F. Townsend as timekeeper, and Air JA. J. Gourley as handicapper. During the day tne sum of £2296 was put through the totalisator, as against £2106 10s last year Ihe train arrangements were bad. On the train leaving at 11 o'clock there was not room inside the carriages for dozens of people who had perforce to occupy the platforms, where they could read with little satisfaction the warning " to the public not to stand on the platforms and ths iutimation that the department would not be responsible for accidents happening to those who neglected the warnirg.
