WELLINGTON NOTES.
BT ONLOOKtB.
April 24.
Magnificent will represent C. Pritchard's stuble at Riccarton. The same trainer has taken Levant, Matuku, Defoe, and Black Squall to Feilding. Patuna will also be raced at Tauherenikau to-day. Wind will not journey to Feilding. He is being reserved for flat races at Marlborough next week.
Two rising two-year-old fillies owned Ly Mr Jorgensen have been handled at .the Hutt. 'J-he Strath braan — Falka youngstei has been named Strathfillin, and the Gipsy Grand — Taurida filly Grand Moreli.
The Wairarapa Racing Club was uulucky on Saturday with the weather experienced for its meeting. The attendance was small, and the totalisator turnover • £1193 behind last year. Heavy showers fell during the afternoon, making the going heavy and sloppy. Raema, favourite for the Hurdles, was beaten half a mile from home. A penalty fails to stop Bounce, who shaped like an old-timer. Talune, who seems over-rated, was second. The Hastings-owned mare Eone (The Officer — Eon) received most support of 10 maid-en candidates, and won nicely from Hinupai. Maestone (Hillstone — Martha), who galloped the last two furlongs fast, finished in third place. The steeplechaser Moccasin was fourth.
Hydrant, who ran second to Gold Crown at Maisterton, was selected as the best of eight runners for the Easter Handicap. Variation made his run a long way from boms, and Hydrant beat- him at the finish. Submarine was fourth. The surprise of the day was the price Sardonyx paid in the Torohanga Hack Race. It was put out that heavy going would net suit him, and that the Masterton penalty would settle him altogether. The totalisator figures bare this out. Of £118 on the race, only £23 was on Sardonyx, -who paid £12 ss. A big commission was worked with the bookmakers in the town. The latter got a great shock when it was known that Sardonyx paid the limit. Royal Blue was not fancied, and finished in the ruck. Declination, a strong favourite, slipped and fell two furlongs from home. Sardonyx came through on the outside at the bend, but had to be kept going at the finish to shake off Matakokiri.
Rustique looked like winning the Waiorangomai Handicap easily two furlongs from home. He ran wide at the turn, allowing Hinurewa to slip up on the inside and score cleverly.
The Gisbarne-owned Faro, who showed some form at Manawatii and Masterton, carried top weight, and won the Hack Welter from 10 others.
1 Roseplot was pulled out of the Hurdles • for the Wangaimoana Welter. He ran well, but was no match for Ziska. St. Bill could not get going in the mud, and finished third to Letheline <Lethe — Evelyn) and Hukaaka in the five-furlong Hack Race. Had the going been solid, St. Bill would have won. The maiden winner (Eone) was well backed, and finished fifth. It is stated that Trumpery is waiting for the hurdle races at Wan--ganui and Auckland meetings.
