HAWKE'S BAY.

A serious gas explosion occurred at GrinFntoii's grocery store. Woodville, on Saturday. An employee named Shore went to light the bi;? burner, when the match wont out. lieavinsr the gas turned on, the man returned "for another, and when he returned With a light a terrific explosion followed.

He was wearing glasses, and had his face immediately under the globe. One of the pebbles of the spectacles was smashed to atoms, and pieces driven into the eye, and it is feared' that Shore will lose his sight. He is a son of the late Mr W. H. Shore, manager of the Kaitangata mine.
