THE GREENFIELD SETTLEMENT
BALLOT AT LAWRENCE. By 10 o'clock on Saturday morning, the time appointed for taking a ballot for the allotments applied for in the Greenfield Settlement, the courthouse at Lawrence, where the ballot was held, was pretty well filled by those interested iv the matter. The ballot was conducted tinder the immediate supervision of Mr D. Barron, Chief Commissioner of Lands, other members of the Land Board present being Messrs Dallas, Tough; and Livingstone. The active part of the ballot was conducted by Messrs R. A. Johnston and J. M'Donald, of the Lands Office, and tho scrutineers appointed by those present to do the drawing from the oal'-ot box were Messrs J. W. Wilson (Balclurha) and R. E. Thompson (Lawrence). The Chief Commissioner, before the ballot took place. _ sad those present were aii very well acquainted with the conditions and regulations under which they applied for the land, and it was therefore xuinecessary for him to read them over. The regulation ho would draw their attention to was regulation 10, which read as follows :— " In the event of there being more approved applicants for any group or subdivision than there are allotments available, the Land Board shall, by ballot, reduce the number of such applicants to the number of allotments available. A second ballot shall then be taken in each such group or subdivision as follows: The name of " each "candidate shall be placed separately in one box and the. number of each allotment shall be placed separately in another box, and lot shall be ■drawn from both boxes simultaneously: and the allotment whose number is so drawn shall go to the applicant whose name is simultaneously drawn, and he shall be deemed to be the successful applicant for that allotment." He (the Chief Commissioner) would also like to draw their attention to the conditions with regard to the reserving of a right to take a railway through certain sections. The condition was that tho right was reserved to take a railway through section 27. 29. 30, 52, 53. 54-, and 55. This j right would be embodied in the lease, and j a proportionate reduction of rent of the I area taken would be allowed. The success- ' ful applicants for these sections, would bear , this in mind. In the case of marred men whose wives also apDlied for land being successful, the board had decided that one I section should be thvown up. That was to ' say._ in the event of the husband securing- ' a right to a section the wife must withdraw her application, or if the wife was successful then the husband must with- i draw. I The. first ballot to decide as to successful and unsuccessful aurclicants then took place anri was followed by the second and final ballot, by which th« various sections in the subdivisions wev G allotted to tho?e who Tind been successful in the first ballot.
