(Notes from the Field.) (a) The inconvenience of this move is that it prevents the retreat of the B-Kt 1 if attacked by P-B 5, as might have been anticipated in thds instance.
(b) At X 2 the bishop would have less scope still ; although B5 is not a better place either, becaiise after 13 P-Kt 3, he has to withdraw to R 3, giving up the bishop for the knight not being commendable either. (c) Ejqual to giving up a pawn (d) Forced, Q-B. 5 being threatened. (c) Threatening* P-Kt 4. . (f) The following variation might he considered '. 23 Rx P I 25 Kt-B 4 B x Xt 24 Kt-Q 4 Bx B 27 Xt PxßKt xXt P 25 Xt x R BK 4 j with Knight and two pawns foi a rook. If 26 Kt-Q 4, then equally 2G B x Kt.
(G) Now comes the fight for the QP
(h) Oh course, Black has an easy draw, but he plays to win. It would have been better to wlay 30 P-Kt 4 at once.
(i) This is a bad move, as speedily shown by Marshall.
(j) If 35 Q-Kt 4 (which Janowski probably intended), then 36 Q-Kt 8 eh, K-Kt 2; 37 Qx B eh, K-R 3; 38. R-Q 7. and wins. (k) The 24 more moves might have been saved by Marshall, as he has only perpetual cheek unless he expected to tiire Janowski into making a blunder. Appended is the fourteenth game in the same match, D. Janowski (White) v. F. J. Marshall (Black): — Rinr Lopez. White. Black. White.
