RACING IN NEW ZEALAND
SOUTHLAND RACIXG CLUB'S MEETLNTO.
(By Oot Special Refokteb..!
First Day — "Wednesday, Aphil 12. The morning was somewhat dul! and threatening for the opening day of the^ Southland Racing Club's autumn meeting; Tlie attendance, which was a trifle- sparse in the early part of the afternoon gradually improved, until the enclosure presented a fairly -welltilled appearance. The track, m consequence of recent rains, was a trifle heavy, but a tour of inspection made prior to the commencement of the rpcing revealed it to be m splendid' order, it being covered with, a fiiie sole of
grass, and showing abundant evidence that it had been receiving plenty of attention. The Steeplechase course, which has lately been undergoing improvements, was a trifle heavy in parts, but showing a good surface. The club has effect-ad a large number cf improve-
nients since its last meeting, amongst them
being a liberal addition to the staoling accommodation, an enlargement of the .sadding paddock, the formation of a new rnembeis' paddock, the erection of a lot of new fencing, and ssvera! minor improvements, which should meet with the approval of the club's patrons. A new grass gallop is in course of formation, and when the contemplated improvements are finished ilie club will liare a, coiirse which will be a, credit to the leading spirits of the Southland Racing Cfcib, which it is hoped will soon take rank as a metropolitan body. The racing throughout the day was fairly interesting, and some surprises were effected. The most noticeable of thede. was the downfaJ! of Vladimir in tlie principal event. It a.ppeared as if the Stepniak horse was being made too much use of during the race, and, although going kindly over the- first couple of Ji«r~.ongs, his rider essayed tc get up on the rails after the first quarter had been negotiated. The top-weight was blocked in his attempt but was immediately taken up on the outside, and from the seven-furlong post was disputing the lead and showing clear of Flower o' Chitha until a mile had been tiaversed, where the favourite was in trouble. Had the horse been kept bandy to Flower o' Clutha without assisting to make the pace the result might have been 3ifterenl. even though the latter appeared to ivin with a. trifle in hand. Wonderful's fall uppearsd. to be the resiilt of a muddling pace, but neither of the riders who came down in the race was injured. The totalisator investments totalled £1665 10a, as -against last year's :olal of £1668. and the club also receives £66 10s n license fees from the bookmakers. The In.•ercargill -Battalion Band discoursed some acceptable nuisu during the day, and the various officials of the club weie energe-tic in the-ir oflorts to make the day a success. lhe> p-tewardc will hold an inquiry to-nisht into the running of Stepfeldt and Captain Kettle in the last race of the day.
