! . April 15. Kohunui, who will probably make his appearance at the Feilding meeting, was schooled over the hurdles at the Hutt last week, and shaped all right. Error was also tried, but jtiruped badly. J. Gibson rode both horses. The handicappers appear unable to get the strength of Gold Crown. He has won six races on end. Con Hussey has taken the stables at the Hutt formerly tenanted by the late R. Kingan. He has Optimist and Galahad in work. I W. Ray has left Higgott's employ, and has ■taken. Rand wick Lodge, where be has a couple of horses m work. Australasia has joined F. Higgott's active team. Maniopoto was awarded 10.4 m the Telephone Handicap on the second day of the Masterton meeting. He has declined hia Feilding engagements, but may be seen out at the Hawke's Bay and Hawera meetings j ' next week. | The country clubs in the southern part of this island are having a most successful run. side the distance. Black Squall ■was purchased by Mrs Watson, of Wellington, for £50, and has won two races since. Mrs Watson is also part owner of Wind with J. Hogg, ov.ncr of Levant. The gelding made a close finish with Gold Crown on the first day of the Horowhenua meeting. He scored both days ait Masterton in good style. He was purchased ouc of a selling race at til's Hutt *or lOOgs, and has done nell since going into C Pritchaid's stable at the Hutt. Moccasin made his re-appearance at the meeting in iaces for gentlemen riders. The black gelding looks very forward on it, and -will be unlucky if he does not -win a good steeplechase for his owner this winter. In the Autumn Handicap on the second day Submarine just failed to concede Variation two stone. The latter is a full brother to Apprentice and Fancywork, and is cv ned by Mr C. F. Vallance, a vice-president of the dub. Royal Blue, who showed good fcrm at the Hutt and Manawatu, won the Opaki Hack Handicap all the way. He ca.me out again in the Railway Hack Handicap, but Sardonyx beat him. The latter was dropped m the- weights for the first time. He was not fancied on the first day, but was heavily backed away from the course in the race he won. The Leader was a big favourite for the Welter Hack Handicap, won by Letherin (Lethe — Culverin). There was a big commission for St. Winifred in the Opaki Hack Handicap on the second day of the Masterton meeting. The mare did not start. She is engaged in the Feilding Cup and Halcombe Welter. Variation will be rehandicapped for the Easter Handicap at the Wairarapa meeting on Saturday next. Gold Crown should be hard to beat in the mile and a-quarter race on the second day. Prosser leaves for Christchurch on "Wednesday, taking Achilles, Boris, Ghoorka, and Exmoor. Marguerite may also make the trip. The Porirua stable will be represented by Gold Crown, Plamen, and Chivalry at Feilding. Flamen and Gold Crown may both start in the Cup. Flamen may win, and Gold Crown rim well on th-3 second day.
