April 9 — To wind up the long spell of dry weather, we are now having a complete change in the shape of cold southerly winds, the mornings being almost sharp enough for one to say there was a touch of frost. Obituary. — On Saturday, April 1, another of the fast-diminishing old identities answered Death's roll call in the person of our muchrespected citizen Mr Thomas Mitchell, after a lingering illness of about 12 months. The late Mr Mitchell was one of those who had hosts of friends, and made no enemies, and though his loss will be a very real one to all, the last few months of suffering so patiently borne by him had prepared' each and everyone for the end, his friends realising that death was indeed a happy release. He being one of the fathers of Oddfellowship, the brethren turned out to pay their las* tribitte of respect lo the departed brother. Another Typhoid Victim.— On Wednesday night, in the hospital, Miss Maiid Campbell succumbed to typhoid, contracted while in the execution of her duties at the hospital. From the beginning her case was a very bad one, and very little hope was entertained of her recovery. As she was th,e daughter of one of the oldest residents in the district the funeral was an exceptionally large one. Valedictory. — On Friday evening the Presbyterian congregation of Cromwell gave a farewell social to Mr Gunn, a student of the Theological College, who has been filling tb.3 vacancy here for the past six months. During his stay here Mr Gunn has been an active worker, and has been very generally esteemed. At the meeting he we* presented with a dressing-case by the young men ot the congregation. Mr King, who made the presentation, tendered him the best wishes of the young men, both in his future studies and in his after life. During the evening a number of music items were given, and also speeches by Messrs D. A. Jolly, Bowie, and 'Ross, who all expressed the appreciation of his good work.
