MISS FLORA STEVENSON.

— Women, not only .in Edinburgh, but all over Scotland, must have been very much interested in, and gratified at, the honours which are being so justly showered upon Miss Flora Stevenson. For a long time Miss Stevenson has been chairwoman of our School Board, and she has long been recognised as one of our leading citizens. Her name has been a household word in Scotland in connection with education, and on matters affecting children's interests on the School Board. Miss Stevenson's work for the uoorer chil-

dren of the city bagan 33 years ago, and -- has cone on steadily ever since. In girls especially she took a deep interest, and has slowly but surely changed the opinion of the general public upon the question of the education of girls. Miss Stevenson also founded the society for clothing and feeding destitute children in our city., so that it is no wonder that her name has come to be associated* with all good works for our city sparrows. Services showing such a public-spirited character could scarcely go unrecognised, and some time ago the degree of LL.D. was conferred upon Miss Flora Stevenson by our University. The other day. moreover, she was presented with her portrait, which was subscribed for by a large number of ladies and gentlemen. The portrait is the work of Mr Alexander Rocbe. E.S.A., and is admirably painted. It shows Miss Stevenson seated at a table, holding a paper in her hand, and looking straight before her. She is gowned in black velvet ornamented with old lace, and her LL.D. gown and hood aie shown unobtrusively by her side. It is a capital likeness, and it is hoped that eventxially it will take its place in the National Portrait Gallery. It is now, of course, a well-known fact that still further honour is tc be shown to Miss Flora Stevenson. us the town council intend to confer on her the freedom of the city at nc very distant date. — Edinburgh lady reporter of the Glasgow Weekly Citizen.
