STUD NEWS AND NOTES.

— The Grafton — Melodious colt, who is at present with his dam at the Elderslie stud, is to be sent to Melbourne to his owner (Mr J. Wren), who sent the mara across some time ago on a visit to Stepniak. Mr Wren sent Melodious to New Zealand because ho believed Mr J. F. Reid s horse was the most likely sire in Australasia to get another Wallace out of -the old maie, ■who, however, missed the first year, and the result of the second mating is unknown to the writer. She is, however, getting into the sere and yellow, and Stepniak's chance with her probably came too late.

— Flying Fox's stud fee is 600gs, and his own brother, Flying Lemur, is standing at 95gs, which figure, to a great extent, is probably based on the reputation of the firstnamed horse.

— In a recent stud note the Special Commissioner of the London Sportsman said, in alluding to the Bend Ors, that one of the most important of them is Maitagon, full brcther in blood to Ormonde, and himself a fine stayer, as lie proved when lie beat 'Bluegreen after a desperate struggle for the Goodwood Cup. Not only has Martagon sired many good winners in this country, but he is well represented on the Continent, especially in Austro-Hungary, and his son, Martian, is the best horse at the Antipodes. Clearly, then, at a 75gs fee, Martagon is not overestimated. He is a. horse of fine temper, and is regularly ridden at exercise.

The mare Polly, whom it will be remembered was attached to Hyland's Circus, aend who started once or twice in jumping races m this colony, was mated with Advance duriDg the show's North Island tour. The result of the union is stated to be a fine foal. It should be called Houpla — a, name which would be equally appropriate whether th« bearer was trying to earn distinction carrying silk in the turf arena or amongst tho spangles and sawdust.
