HIDE SALES

Messrs Dalgety and Co. (Limited) report having held their usual fortnightly sale of hides at their stores, "Vogel and Cumberland streets. 011 Thursday, the 9th inst., when they submitted a fair catalogue to a good attendance of buyers. Bidding vras very brisk for all on offer, and prices for light and medium hides, compared with those of last sale, advanced id per lb, while heavy ox and cow hides sold well at late rates. They quote: Prime ox hides, 5Jd to o^d ; extra heavy and good, 6d to 6Jd ; good ox hides, 4gcl to 5Jd ; medium do, 4d to 4gd ; heavy cow. 4Jd to od ; good do. 4Jd to 4|d; medium do. 31d to 4gd; damaged and inferior, 2Jd to 31d per lb; yearlings, 2s to 5s 6d; calfskins, Is to 2s lOd each.

Movitzson and Co. report as follows: — We held our usual fortnightly sale of hides at our stores, Bond and Jetty streets, on Thursday, when we offered a catalogue of 114 hides and calfskins to an average attendance of buyer 3. Our catalogue was made up principally of hides of light and mediumweights, with the exception of a few heavy hides ; and although theae were not in the best of condition, we obtained as high as s|d for some. Prices realised for light and medium-weight hides were most satisfactory, and showed a slight improvement on those paid at our last sales. The following are a few of the, be3t prices obtained for light, medium, and" heavy-weight hides: — 7 cow hides averaging 411b, sd ; 4do 411b, od ; 8 ox 421b, 4|d; 9 do 491b, 4|d ; 10 do 531b, 4gd; 7 do 531b, 4gd; 1 do (heavy) 701b, s|d ; 1 do 761b, sid; 2 do 601b, ogd; 2 do 66.b, SJd. We quote: Extra prime ox (stout), old to 6^d ; heavy do, ojd to 03d ; medium do, 4id to sd ; light do, 4sd to 3d ; heavy cow, 4Jd to 4|d ; medium dc, 4jd to 4gd ; light do, i\d to 5d per lb , yearlings, 5s 6d to 6s 6d ; calfskins (large), 2s 9d to 3s 3d ; calfskins (small). 2s 4d to 2s Sd ; horse hides, 8s 6d to 10s each.

Messrs Waters, Ritchie, and Co. report having held their usual fortnightly sale of hides at their stores. Crawford street, on Thursday ruorning. There was the usual attendance of buyers, and competition was very keen at late rates. Our catalogue of 110 hides were made up principally of country butchers' lines, and the following were some of our best prices: — Three 641b ox, ojcl ; two 661b, 5Jd ; two 661b, sgd ; four 601b, sgd ; two 70lb, s£cl ; one 601b, 5Jd ; one 661b, sd ; one 601b, sd. We quote : Extra prime stout ox, from. 5Jd to 6Jd ; heavy, 5d to s\d ; rnediuni, 4Jd to 4£d; light, -lsd to 4Jcl; extra heavy -cow, 4|d to sd; medium, 4^d to 4|d ; light, 4Jd to sd ; yearlings. 4*d to 4|d per lb ; calfskins, Is 6d to 5s each.

Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report as follows: — We held our usual fortnightly sale in our Maclaggan Street Stores on Thursday, the 9th inst., when we offered a catalogue of 390 hides, comprising 317 ox, 45 cows, 20 calfskins, and 8 yearlings, to a large gathering of the trade. Our catalogue, taken on the whole, was a fairly representative one. Heavy stout ox were keenly competed for at up to 6Jd. Heavy ox of poor substance and medium weight ox were not in request, and sold relatively cheaper than any of the other classes. Cow hides of all weights sold well. Light-weights, both ox and cow, were in great demand, the latter fetching tip to od pea: lb. A few of our individual sales may be of interest:—Ox: Two 761b, 6fd; eleven 70lb, 6Jd ; two 601b, s|d; three 68lb, s£d ; five 671b, 5%d; eighteen 661b, s£d ; twenty-four 621b, ogd ; four 611b, s|d. Cow. Seven 42'.b, sd; five 431b, 4|d per lb. Messrs Strouach, Morris, and Co. report as follows — We held our fortnightly sale ot hides at our stores, Crawford street, on Thursday, 9th inst., when there was an average attendance of buyers. Competition was very keen for light-weight hides, both ox and cow, and for these values ruled rather higher than those of a fortnight ago. Medium-weights held their own, and heavy-weights were a shade easier. We offered a catalogue of 280, but had nothing of exceptional quality forward, our top price for ox being 53, d, at which figure we sold one lot averaging 661b ; several other lines brought sgd, ojfccl, and 3d. In cow hides our lop price

was sd. which was paid for more than on*> line of light-weights. logue did not include any heavy-weights, but competition for all sorts was brisk, and prices ruling last week were fully maintained. Our top price was s|d, for a line of 721b ox hides, while 5d was obtained for three lots of cow hides weighing 451b, 431b, and 421b respectively. We quote : Extra stout heavy ox, 5Jd to 6Jd heavy do, s£d to s£d; medium do, tfd. to s|d ; light do, 4gd to 4 Jet ; extra prime heavy cow, s§d to 4|d; medium do, 4|d to 6d; light do, 4Jd to 4§d ; stags and bulls, 2d to 3|a per lb ; yearlings, 3s to 6s ; calfskins, Is 6d to 4s; horse hides. 7s 6d to 10s each. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) report holding their usual fortnightly sale at their stores, liower Rattray street, on Thursday, when the/ offered a full catalogue to the usual representative gathering of buyers. As has been the case for some time back, medium-weight hides were in most demand, and, in comparison with the heavier, brought better prices and showed a result, on values obtained, quite up to prices ruling a fortnight ago; in fact for medium cow there appeared to be a sligru advance. Values may be quoted as under. Prime ox, 5?, dto 6Jd ; extra heavy do, to 6|d , medium d0,~41d to sid; light do, 4J;d to 4|d; heavy cow, 4|d to sd ; medium do, 4gd to 4gd , light do, 4d to 4£d. The Otago Fanners' Co-operative Association of New Zealand (Limited) report as follows: — We held our usual fortnightly sale of hides.at our stores, Crawford and Vogel streets, on Thursday 9th inst., when we offered a medium catalogue to the usual attendance of buyers-. Our hides consisted mostly of light -and me*Liuin cow and ox hides from countryclients, a few being slightly damaged through cutting. Prices on a whole were quite satisfactory, and, showed an increase on those of otnr previous sale. The following were some of the best sales:— Ox hides averaging 60lb, 6Jd; do 491b, 4|d; do 421b, 4gd per lb; cow hides (cut), averaging 561b, 4£d; do 441b, 4Jd. "We can quote: Extra stout heavy ox, sgd to 6id ; heavy, s£d to sid ; medium, 4fd to 5Jd ; extra stout heavy cow up to sd; medium to 4|d per lb; yearlings, 3s to 7s; calfskins, 2s to 3s each.
