CROMWELL.

March 12. — The weather is now much cooler, and to-day it is trying hard to rain, whicf would do a power of good in freshening up the water supply. All the small creeks round about are very low, and require flushing out badly.

The Typhoid j-.pidemic. — It is my sad duty to report another death from typhoid. The young -fellow Eoss in , the hospital passed away on Friday morning after a serious succession of hemorrhages. The rest of the patients ara gfitiing on as well as can be expected. Another patient has bean brought down from Mount Pisa Station, and, I understand, the manager Scaife) is also laid * up with the disease. It is now patent to al that some drastic measures must be en forced to safeguard the community, even if it be at the expense of shifting the station buildings to some other part of the run. Dr Ogston, the health officer, again visited thr district, this time going up to the case at Rocky Point. I think it would be a step in the right direction to appoint inspectors to visit the back yards of a good many place 1 in the district, a course of action which might possible save trouble in the future.

Dredging. — Mining maitters are still quiet on the Clutha. The fleet are all grinding away, ■with lair results. The Sunshine is the latest on the list, "with 28oz, which is a start, and better should follow. — Mr Wm. Orr has, I understands, been appointed in Mr Troy's stead, and as he has been m the company's employ for several years the appointment should be a wise one. — The Junction Electric Company is busily engaged in shifting the Cromwell No. 2 -down to be placed on its Cromwell claim at Cornishtown Point. With this dredge the claim should have a fresh lease cf life.
