The CC. and D. Company cabled to-day the following frozen meat quotations: — Canterbury mutton, 4|d ; Napier. Wellington, and North Island, 3^d. Lambs — First quality, 6d ; second, s|d: Beef— Hinds, 3Jd; fores, 2gd.

WELLINGTON. March 1

The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following market report from Mr Gow, commercial agent for the colony in South Africa, dated Capetown, January 31: — " Maize (Argentine) quotations, 4s Id per 1121b, but it is now the off season for Argentine. Oats : Argentine are quoted at 4s 3d per 1001b (c.i.f. at Capetown). The local crop is heavy, and quotations are 7s 6d per 1501b (delivered I *. Bran : Local mills Quote 5s 3d to 5s fid (delivered), only a small quantity being sold, but the Argentine quoted 9ftd (f.0.b.) ; Queensland, 9d U-0.b.); Victorian, 9§d (f.0.b.). Poultry : In fowls theTe is a brisk demand for Russian on account of the even weights and excellent packing of the birds. The quotation (c.i.f. at Capetown) is 7Jd to 8d per lb fcr weights of 211b to 311b each. Ducks: Russian are also much m demand, and weights of 31b to -4lb each quoted at 7d~ and 7id per lb (c.Lf.). Cheese quotations : Dutch and Canadian about the same as on the date of last report — namely, 4id to 4|d per lb (f.0.b.). Queensland advancod from 5Jd to 5Jd (f.0.b.). Mutton (frozen) • Argentine, 3Jd ; Australian* 3Jd (c.i.f.) Beef (frozen) : Argentine 2fd ; Australian, 2Jd (c.i.f.). Veal (frozen) : Argentine, 3|d; -vitstralian. 4Jd (c.i.f.). Rabbits: New South Wales, 12s 3d (c.i.f.); Victorian, 12s 6d to 12s 9d (c.i.f., first grade)."

Horses were not a notable lot, the most important being a brood marp, which changed hands at £01.

March 3. The second day cf Station Peak sale attracted another good attendant p of btn-eib, though not so many as on the first day. The sheep consisted principally of stoic wetheis a-nd lambs, and, though competition was again very keen, the prices realised were hardly so high for the c-°ss cf sheep a& ou the previous day. The figures weie sufficiently gcod, however, to satisfy both vendor sane? auctiorcers, and aro a gcod indication of the scarcity o£ sheep and the surplus of iced. As on the first day, more than half the sheep are intended ior Canterbury buyers from their com-p«-ting keenly for the various lines. T-vvo-tooth wethers were quitted at 17s 9d to 18s Id, over 3000 being purchased for northern pastures. The wether lambs, numbering about 7000. brought from 13s for a line off Station Peak Station io 14s 7d for a pen off Otekaike. The biggest sale was 1610, to Mr J Mtiirhead. of A=hburton, at 13s 9d. The best lins of lambs offered was about a 500 thrse-quarterbred lot (mixed sexes) frcm Buscot, which were knocked down pt 17s Id (the fop figtire of the day for lambf), and the culls of the same brought 14s 2d. Pens of halfbred lambs (mixed sexes) brought lis 3d and 13s sd, while merino ewes changed hands s* lls 24. Rams were not in much demand, and the reserve was only bid in two or three cases. The best of the working diaught horses brought up to £34 10s, and light working horses £17 10s. "The implements also brought satisfactory figures.
