The late Mr D. Y. Mills, chess champion of Scotland (the Yorkshire Post says), was naturally one of the most brilliant of players, but in late years he kept his attacking propensities under judicious restraint, andl his serious match games show all the chaiacteristics of modern scientific chess. The following story is told by the Rev. G. A. Macdonnell: — A prize was promised to the winner of the most brilliant game, but was really intended for the winner "who performed the most brilliant feat. The indefiniteness o£ the original offer once led to the following funny incident in a tourney at Simpson's Divan : An illustrious sky-iocketter (Mr Mills) let off a series of fireworks that blew up the defences of the enemy and opened a e'ear way to the citadel. But. impetuously rushing on to capture it, he stumbled into a little pit, and was so seiiously injured that he fell an easy victim to his opponent. "Wftll, paid the lucky man when the battle was over, "I will enter this game for the brilliancy prize ; it ought to win it for me." "Win it for you! You c!i<3 nothing brilliant." "Perhaps not, but you did. The game is very brilliant, and 'tis prize is for the winner of the most brilliant game, and lam the winner." I need scarcely add that my worthy friend's logic was admired, but his claim was disallowed. The championship of the Hongkong (China) Chess Club has been won by C. H. Fallou, a foimer «tinn", Ci itish plavcr.
