DEPARTURE OF THE AUSTRALIANS
Quite unexpectedly the Australian •Eleven departed on their return to Christchurch by the first express yesterday moming. The Otago Cricket Association was represented at the station by Mr C. R. Smith (vice-president) and Mr E. S. Wilson (secretary). Prior to the team's departure Mr Noble (the Australian captain) expressed gratification at the treatment meted out to the them during their short stay in Dunedin. i-He was somewhat disappointed at the cricket shown by the local eleven, mere especially as they had been told Otago was the strongest province they would meet ; but he could as.?ure the members of the Otago team that they had justly earned every run -scored. Mr Noble felt sure that the low scoring did not indicate the true form of -Otago, and he attributed' the downfall of several of the batsmen to want of confidence. The Australians commence their match against a New Zealand team
