WAIKOUAITI.

March 6. — The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday night last, the Mayor (Mr K. Templeton) presiding, and all the councillors being present. The Secretary Lands Department wrote, in reply to the council's application for certain waste lands within the borovgb, that the matter was being inquiied into. The Mayor of Duneclin forwarded draft of constitution of Advance Olago League, which was received and laid on the table for" consideration. Several ratepayers in E-ast Ward presented a petition to "have a footpath formed along the lagoon road and Inverary street, which, with other applications for approaches and crossings, was referred to the Works Committee, who were also instructed to procure about 80yds of Wai-anakaroa gravel for spreading in Edinburgh street. In consequence of a strong complaint of damage done to private • property by cattle wandering on the streets of the borough, it was decided to call for applications for a man to act as ranger, lamplighter, etc., and the dayman's attention was drawn to a motion already passed, that owners of cattle wandering at night time be summoned. The clerk was instructed to write the Domain Board re the water channel in the upper part of the Domain being blocked with silt, causing obstruction to drainage from Glasgow street, and he was also directed to write the railway authorities again, as well as to Dr Ogston, calling attention to the disgraceful state of the borrow pits lying alongside the station, and the nuisance caused by Hhem. At a special meeting which followed. Cr Heckler, in accordance with notice of motion given previously, moved that the council take the necessaiy steps to abolish the wards within the borough, the alteration to come into force on April 1 next. Cr Davis seconded the motion, which, after full discussion, was carried unanimously, and it was decided to hold a special meeting on the 27th inst. to confirm the resolution.

Boz Trial.— A me sting- of the Dog Trial Club was held in the Atheuseum on the Ist inst., Mr A. S. Orbsll (president) occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance. The balance sheet of the previoug year's meeting showed a credit of £11 12a 7d. The following office-beareis for the ensuing year were elected: — President, Mr A. S. Oibell ; \ ice-presidents- Mr T. Mackenzie, M II X., Messrs H. Buckland and O. T. Evans; secretary. Mr F. H. Ward; assistant secretary, Mr P. E. Wilson; treasuier, Mr J. M'Gill. It was likewise decided to invite two well-known gentlemen to act as judges. Sale of Work.— -A very, successful sale of

work iv connection with the Primitive Methodist Church was held in the Public Hall on Wednesday last. The sale, which was in aid of the new church fund, was opened by Mr R. Templeton (Mayor), who complimented the stallholders upon the appearance of the stalls and upon the large quantity of articles offered for sale. The safe was well patronised during the afternoon, and in the evening the hall wag crowded to excess. The stallholders again did good business, snd the phrenologist (Mr C. H. Lo\vden) had a busy time. The following were the stallholders — Plum reiving — Mrs E. Aitcheson, Misses M. Houston and A Stiingeri r fancy goods — Hisses J. Flaini and E. Tavlor; lolly btall— Misses P. Kenward and C. Hagan; Chridtmas tree — Misses L. Jones and_A. Fry; bran tvb — Misses M. Williamson and J . Houston; refreshments — Mrs Houston ard Misses E. Shand, L. Cnrruthers, E. Summeis, K. and ii. Williamson, C Kenward, and F. Fry. The sale resulted in over £80 being tokpn, and the* new church will benefit) to the extent ot over £70.
