WAITAHUNA
February 27. — The extremely hot weather of the last month broke on Saturday with a light thunderstorm, and light ram has fallen at intervals since. - This warm rain will be of great benefit to the turnip crop, which promises to be fairly good this season. The oat crops are looking well, paid indicate a satisfactory harvest.
School Trip. — By way 07 a change the Waitahuna School held the annual picnic at Taieri Mouth last week. The weather being perfect picnic weather, and the place chosen, an ideal picnic resort, combining beach and. bush, the children spent a very enjoyable day. The picnickers numbered 140, and, encouraged by the patronage accorded, it is the intention of the committee, in the event of making; another trip to the same place, to secure a special $rain to allow of quicker transit. Some more satisfactory arrangement might also bo made with Mr M'Kegg to obviate the necessity of landing half the party at Taieri Bridge, the distance to walk being too far from the station.
WartaJmna Show. — The proposal of the Law-i-ence Farmers' Club to amalgamate the Lawrence and Waitahuna shows and hold them, in each place alternately does not meet -with, favour in this district. Delegates from the ' Tuapeka Society are »to attend the local clu3» meeting to-night to lay the Lawrence view of the question before the members, but ifc is almost safe to pronounce the proposal a foregone failure, as no benefit could accrue to Wailalmna from the change. The cluTj is imrchasing a purebred shorthorn hvll for the district.
Greenfield Roads. — Lawrence and Waitahuna have suddenly awakened to the advantage of^ having good roads in their vicinity since the sale oi Greenfield. Strenuous efforts are now being made to have -foads from both places ciade to the settlement. The County Council representations to the Government on the subject of a road from the Waitahuna River to Greenfield have sc far been favourably entertained, as notice has been received to the effect that an immediate survey will be made of the desired road.
Flower Show.— The Horticultural. Society's show was held the other day, and, despite the unfavourable spring, a good show of bloom fl-as obtained. The sw&et peas' exhibit, in particular, was very creditable, as was also the gladioli. The judge, Mr Harnel, was particular in selecting these two flowers for special praise. The vegetable section was : Airly good.
