The following is the forty-second annual report of the Otago Benevolent Trustees for presentation to the meeting of subscribers on Thursday next: — The total number of persons relieved during the year was 3750, a decrease of 197 on the previous year. The number of inmates on January 1, 1904, was 190 men and 65 women; — total, 256. Received into the institution during the year, 151 men -and 59 women — total, 210 (including 15 women echnitted into the lymg-iro waid). Discharged, 152 uien and 58 women ;— total, 210. Leaving on December 31, 1904, 189 men and 66 women; — total, 255. Forty-c-ight deaths occurred during the year. The expenses of the institution amounted to £4562 0s Bd. The expenses for maintenance amotmted to £4339 14s 4d, an increase of £179 9s 5d on the previous year. The charges are • '& S£Sj gf fgod, jelothiPSj. fuel, house, fjirnish,-
ings, salaries of master, matron, servants, ancl doctor, medicines, funerals, municipal rates, half office expenses, and all working expenses m connection with the institution. The weekly average v;as 261, as a against 253 last year, which gives a charge of 6s 4d per head per week. The amount disbursed on outdoor relief was £5709 0s 10d, a decrease of £101 6s on the previous year. The total amount expended was £10,652 12s 6d.
