STIRLING

January 5. — The holidays have been kept here by a whole round of picnics. We had' the State school picnic up the Molyneux on the steamer Clyd-e to Begg's station. It was not the best of days, but everyone seems to have enjoyed the trip. Two days later a similar trip was made up to Whitelea. This trip was given by Mr M'Skimming and Son, Benhar. sphere - must have been over 300 people present. It was a thorough success, due to fine weather, good "organisation, and the liberality of the hosts, which was not stinted in any direction. This has been voted the best picnic for many a long day in this district. Two days after followed the Sunday school picnic, at Smith's' Bush. The day was perfect for the bush, and there was a good ' turn out. The -teachers' worked hard to make it a success, and were able to give satisfaction to young and old. Five days saw the three picnics through, and yet they were all successful, showing how easily vj'e colonials take to our play. Crops. — The grain crops are in a very backward condition, and one wonders when the harvest will be this year. Many of the turnip crops are looking well, but not a few are } very late. Grass is now plentiful, and stock j looking well. Bowling. — The local club has played several matches, and has done fairly well for so young a club. The various competitions among niernb&rs are contested with great zest. Some of the leading winners are beginning" to look qiiite superior. Health. — During the last year there was considerable sickness, but I cannot recall a single death during the year. Holidays.— There has been an air of quietness during the holiday times — not quite frea from the usual drunkenness of thisi season, though it has not been bad.
