The weather appears to have conspired with the Fates in order to discount the 'success of the carnival and exhibition. There was tb havejbeen a,_ Highland gathering in tho 'recreation ground last night, ,and extensive preparations had been made to illumine the grounds ,with electric light ; but heavy rain set-in early in the morning- and spoilt^ all the arrangements, as in the' case of -the athletic sports last" Wednesday ; in- ; de«d, it would appear . as though Taranaki -risvendeavouring^ to live up to its unenviable reputation of being able to produce rain three days out of every four ais reported by a local pressman. Notwithstanding the inclement weather, the exhibition is 'still in high favour with the public, arid although the carnival has only pased through one week of its three weeks' , existence the success has been amply 1 demonstrated 1 , and I am authorised by the executive ' to inform your readers that its financial success 'is assured, the- revenue derived from "floor rents being sufficient to pay for the cost' of the erected. This is, indeed, gratifying, and the executive deserve well of their townsmen for the successful manner ' in, which they carried out the big task .which" has culminated in the prese-nt exhibition. In no other way could the resources and productiveness Nof Taranaki be so and attractively advertised, and) financial success is a fitting reward for such praiseworthy effort. . On Friday night the executive found themselves possessors^ of an extremely interesting exhibit *of a /class not provided for v either in the schedule, or catalogue -of exhibits. One of- the wa nines in the model Maori village added* to the hapu a. bouncing baby' boy. Everybody was delighted', and half the town has been sitting up at night trying' to devise a comprehensive name for the little '■stranger. .'The executive, prompted most of' paternal feelingp^raset to, the. qcoa-sion,'-andtprese^t&d.''"thev in.ia'nt L ' I 'with a.' silver^ '-loving/ cup, -inscribed as, "follows i-^'.^Kia, .-''Kapiwarra ! Various attractions are promised during the next . two \ireeks ? . The town is full of visitors, accommodation being taxed to the utmost. ! . - NEW -PLYMOUTH, January 2.
