WAITHUNA FARMERS CLUB. THE ANNUAL SHOW. (By Our Special Reporter.)

Eon. life member, Mr a. Garden; president, Mr J. Cowen; vice-presxuent, Mr W. Cameron; .committee— Messrs A. Sutherland, W. Crozier, J. Scott, J. H. Bateman, V.' Ham--mond, B. M'Corkindale, P. Ellis, E. M'Caw, J. Eose, T. Corry, A. Livingston, P.'Fuldseth, A. Rowe, Gr. Eoss, W. Craig, A. Keech, and >Wr J. Livingstone ; secretary, s Mr E. M'Ara. ' The Waitahuna Farmers' Club held its twenty-fourth annual show at the Show Grounds, "Waitahuna, on Wednesday, when the weather conditions were perfect and there was a satisfactory attendance of the jbubjic. Cattle, sheep, and dairy produce showed an .appreciable increase- in entries on last year, but horses, and more especially draughts, showed a" regrettable" decrease. Taken altogether, the stock exhibited" was very good, and a very appreciable advance in quality generally was noticeable. The exhibit 'of sheep was a credit to "the, district, and the horses on , an' average were >good? bvit if the Lawrence and Waitahuna shows, which follow so closely after one another," livere amalgamated one migiht expect better competition. As it is, two shows are, held ■within a "few miles of each other, instead of the district combining to make a representa- ■ tive exhibition, which might be- held in the one place one year and 'the other the next. The Waitahuna show was . well managed, -and in thjsjf'espect \is Jdue',. to the secretary, Mr R. M r Ara; who had everything connected with his' department in firstclass order, "."■',•"* In the draughts? > section three animals " entered the ring "dn 'the class for entires ''tliree years -old~ r and upwards — namely, Darrdey," owned ."-Tby Mr .J. Robinson," of Tpkomairiro ; Prince Victor, owned by Mr A. M'Millan, of Waitahuna ; and Lord Roberts, owned by Mr R- J- Cowlcs, ~of Lawrence. After careful examination the ' judges found there could be no getting away -from^the breeding of Agitator's son, Prince "Victor, and this animal was awarded first, an i subsequently the championship. Prince Victor was sired by, the famous Papakaio Lorse Agitator, out of a Salisbury maie, and -was bred, by Mr S. Young, of Allanton. This "entire was second at Milton show this season.' Darnley, a" beautiful dark brown horse, was placed second. He 13 by- Marshal - Keith, a famous prize -taker in' Scotland and Australia, out of Primrose" 11, by Lord Dunmore — Rosebary, and was,, bred by Mr W. Boag. Lord Roberts,- the other , horse, was by Lord- Lyon,' and was second last year at" both Lawrence and . Waitabuna- w shows.. There were no three-year geldings forward, and only r " one two-year 'colt — Mr W. Bla^kie's (Waitahima) Herd -Laddie' Yet,- by Herd Laddie out of a N .Clan Gordon mare, a colt of fine promise, and of. good vbohe and/ sub-, stances. ~ The only* yearling forward v was. a likely-looking" youngster " shown by Mr r 'D. Stevenson. No brood 'mares were forward,, but Mr T:' Lqwery, of Lovell's "Flat, Had" two splendid three-year fillies on exhibition — as fine a pair as could be found in a show -ring this season. These two were awarded the prize for pair of mares and first and- second in* tbe three-year filly class ; in t&a latter, however, they were 'the. onlyentries. The' best of the two, a bay, was awarded. the. championship, and • the other was first-in the yeld mare class. In thoroughbreds oiily .one ' aged entire \ % was forward. This was Mr Tj-Lowery's beautiful dark ehestrwit'Mvisket, by Casket out of'the Bd*hwell mare Lucy. Musket was ;first~at Tokomairiro, first at Ohiiha, and was also first at YWaitahuna and Lawrence last year, and he was awarded _ the championship, 'Two brood mares were' forward,, and the first and championship went v H. Craig's Jane Eyre, a well-known old racer, but now in h«r old age. "The other mare was -more cf v a hackney. The weight-carrying hacks and spring-cart horses included a_ few^ very good animals. ■ _-_""-, „ ..' In shorthorn- cattle Messrs Cameron. .Eros, and -Mr- J. Robertson.' {Tuapek"a)v were the most successful exhibitors, ."and in.Ayrshires the contest, lay -between Mr.' J. t Robert c ori and Mr AJ.'.M'Millan. This section included 'sbine really "fine animals,, and. the champion' cow was_ especially noticeable for'pure Ayr r shire breeding.- The. .only. -aged ", bull, was shown by 'Mr A. Fraser. " In -the crossbred Efction -Tiheje were a few first-class * dairy. COWS; / - - . _ ' / The sheep sections showed a decided improvement on. last year's lot, though there was^not very much competition. In merinosMessrs Cameron Bros., of Green Hills, had two entries in the class for any! age rain, but the" second animal was only a hogget. The firsfc^ was a very fine ram, well set up, o£_ grand strong comting fleece, and of a stamp admirably , suited for breeding -in the class of country "in the district. He was bred by Mr W. Telfer, of _ Clifton,' and was first at. Lawrence last year. Messrs Cameron JBros. jalw> Becured both prizes in .the fouT-tooth ewe 01a93. The first prize animal was -a fine combing meriijo, w&ll set up and cif 'splendid fleece and character ; and the recond was c also- a-Jgood sheep," perhaps rather the better sheep," and ih& "pjreference was evidently given to '< x the fine- combing wool over strong combing. Border. Lcicesters - were few in- number. biifc-_ vpry gond sheep all' round. .Messrs Cameron Btc-^. had two'fourfooth rams forward."- Tliecliainpion was a two-shear ram. -densely- wooHed--with, good staple, well set up, -of good .character, and^ sp^ndi'd/^igrpe.. The second rain was not -so densely woolled, and did not show so much character.,' Mrs showed 'two 'fine strong sheep in. the ram hogget class .^ and Messrs" Cameron -Bros, had 3 two , good st'fep in"'the, four-tooth ewe class, securing the champion-ahip. Two very \ good ewe fcosrgets were', shown by Mr W. Farqu'harson. In "the cross-bred section bhe veteran breeder, Mr John Tough, of Milton, and Mr W. !Fa rq'ufaarßon were to the" fore with some of their ' well-known sheep. . - The former -shewed two fine ewe hoggets in/the strongwool seciionr-one a long-wool cross and the other of -a Shropshire strain. Mr >R. Gunn had the only Downs rams forward, and both strongly resembled the Ngapara breeding. In Romneys, Messrs Cameron Bros, showed a very densely woolled' and well set up ram. and also a good ram hogget, and Mr J. Toufh showed two . grand J pur-tooth ewes. There was good competition in the dairy produce,, section, •' and. "the exhibits were of good "quality all through. The prize list was -as follows: — CATTLE. * Suct^es; Messrs D.
