GOLF TOURNAMENT.
The golf tournament was continued at Baltttapawau yesterday morning in weather 1 that -was even worse *than that of the previous <Tay. Soon after play started weaklier conditions improved; but a strong gusty wind continued all' day and interfered considerably with the r comfort of the playcsrs and the progress A the matches. The greens were* little the Torso for the night's heavy rain, and were in excellent order, although a triftle heavy for *' putting." The morning competition was confined to the Bogey Singles, which resulted in a tie between Messrs G. H. MacEwan and J. A. Gow, each with 6 down on Bogey, and the afternoon was devoted to the Foursome Bogey Match, which resulted, in a win for 2Xessrs A. F. Roberts and G. M. Mao Lean, v-'ith 2 down. The score of the winners, in the sV»ursome match, considering the weather, was generally conceded to be an excellent one. The following are the principal scores: — OPEN HANDICAP (Bogey Singles). Hop. Scott and J. C. M. Scott,.. 5 13 down At the conclusion of the tournament the players and visitors returned to the club house, where teaand refreshments were served, and the prizes were distributed. The President of the Club (Mr James Mills), before presenting the winner? with their trophies, congratulated the players on the completion of anothe. New Year's toxirnainent, and assured them that it gave him verry great I'leasure to distribute the award 3. The weather, he regretted to say, had not been altogether favourable for golfing, but they could at least extract this comfort from it, that it afiord«d a good excuse for those pCayers who had not done as well as they wished. — (Laughter.) Ono of the matters for congratulation at this year's tournament was that they had had visitors and players from the other side — (applause) — a fact which gave them all a great deal of pleasure, and he hoped such visitors would be more numerous at future gatherings,- and that future .tournaments would be so arranged as to give increased attractions to visitors from ' Australia and elsewhere to take part in their - mutches. - The trophies were then distributed as follows: — Amateur Championship (silver-mounted inkstand anc' championship cup) — Mr G. H. M'Ewan ;■ Open Handicap (aneroid barometer), for play foi 36 holes — J. R. Scott ; morning play, 18 holes (silver serviette ring) — Mr S. K. Sleigh; , after noon play, 18 holes (shaving glass) — Mr J. Gow ; Bogey Foursome (silvermounted spirit flask and sovereign case) — Messrs A. F. Roberts and G. F. Mac Lean. The lie for the Open (Bogej Singles) • between Messrs MacEwan and Gow will- be played off at a future date. .-- At the conclusion of the distribution of trophies, oheers were called for and given for ■ . the president and also for the visitors.
