The weather was all that could be desired, but the attendance, although fairly large, was not equal to last year's. The Balclutha Brass Band, under Conductor R. M'Neill, played a number of selections during the afternoon, and there were also seven or eig— t. pipers on the ground, co the visitors had plenty of music. The sports were a little slow at first, a sta.rt not being fairly made until half-past 1 1 o'clock, but towards the close of the day a little more energy was thrown into the proceedings. Mr C. C. Spedding made a most efficient secretary and manager, and was well j backed by the president (Mr Dunne) and a , large number of officials; in fact, it was open to question if there were not too many officials. The programme was ■well drawn up, being very varied and embracing all kinds of" sports. The wood-chopping and sawing coni tests were, as is usually the case, the most interesting feature of the gathering. Un*ori tunately, the ground stewards were not very j successful hi keeping the ground clear, and it w*s rushed, and prevented the majority of the i spectators having a good view of the proceedings. This was also the case when the wrest- | ling was going on, 'the large committee ap- • parently being helpless to keep the ground i clear. K. J. Scott, the champion wrestler, being present, had not the slightest difficulty in annexing the principal prizes, but Ms opponents were sufficiently skilful to enable him to give a good exhibition of his style. Nicol, who hails from South Canterbury, won the principal running events, winning every race ! he started in. Two or three minor events -were ! undecided when the train left for Dunedin.
