December 14. — Mr R. L. Mawson, who has baeii manager of the creamery at Waitati for four and a-half years, was entertained at a social on Monday evening. Despite very wet weather, about 100 residents and a few visitors were present. Mr A. Kilpatrick occupied the chair, and explained the object of the meeting. Two presentations were made to Mr Mawson. Mr William Pullar, on behalf of the milk-suppliers, presented hini with a gold albsrt and pendant s\titably inscribed, and spoke of the uniform courtesy of Mr Mawson and the perfect goodfellowship which had always existed between the manager and the suppliers. The Rev. A. M Finlayson — who, on behalf of the residents generally, presented Mr Mawson with a gladstone bag, travelling rug, and buggy tvg — referred to the interest which he had taken in the place and people, especially in the young people in Sabbath school work, and to his manly, straightforward, Christian character and kindly disposition, which had won him many friends. Mr William Mawson, father of the guest, very feelingly acknowledged the kindness shown to his son. Appreciative addresses were given also by Mr P. Briscoe and Mr A. Fenwick. Mr Mawson, in reply, cordially thanked the donors for their valuable gifts, and expressed the pleasure lie had. in his relations with the suppliers and the residents of Waitati. and his gratification that what he had done and tried to do had been so highly appreciated. During the evening instrumental music selections — violin, cornet, and piano — were rendered by Mr J. Wilson and Master John and Miss Vera Wilson; solos by Miss West, Miss Park (Dunedin), and Mrs Trew; a duet by Mr and Mrs Hilgendorf; and a recitation by Mr A. Fenwick. Mr Manning acted very ably as accompanist to the singers.
