THE LABOUR MARKET.

The December issue of the Labour Journal contains the following remarks with reference to the local labour marketBuilding trades : Good business doing in most branches of the trade. Carpenters and stonemasons are fully employed. Engineering trades : Very quiet ; considerable falling off from last month. Boilermakers : very quiet. Boot trade : Still very, quiet ; a number of men are out of employment, and others are %vorking on short time. Clothing trade: Still keeping very busy.; all hands are fully employed. Retail trade generally: Good business doing. Saddlery trade: Good; all hands fully employed. Fellmongery : Quiet in some parts in this district; in other parts full time is being worked; while in the tanneries overtime is being worked. Unskilled labour : There is still a number of applicants for employment, but now that the work in connection with the tram line is again being pushed on very little more should be heard of men out of employment. During the month just ended 26 men, with 66 depending on them, have been sent to private and Government employment.

Oamaru. — Building trades : Good in timber and stone, all available hands employed. Engineering trades : Full time is not being made by regular hands. Boot trade: Good; all regulir hands employed. Clothing trade : • . Good ; full time made. Retail -trade (general) : Good. Miscellaneous : Good business being done in all branches of trade. Unskilled labour: Only cne person applied _ for. work, the office securing private employment for him. The shearing is now in full swing, a great number of men finding employment at the various sheds in the district. Every good man willing to work can get work at good wages.
