North, S. W. Hall, H. Cowan. D. Hughes, W. Robertson, E. Weir, A. Porterfield, C. Smail. W. Cowan, W. Gill, F. Hellver, and D. D. Seaton.
The Otago Peninsula Agricultural and Pastoral Society's twenty-seventh annual show was held at Portobello on Saturday, and the function was attended by all the success that has attended shows held in this locality in the past. As usual, great interest was manifested in the show by local residents, but not a few visitors from other districts were present, and the attendance during the afternoon was quite up to expectations, despite the fact that intermittent wind and rain squalls made things decidedly unpleasant on the ground at times. Strong features of the show were undoubtedly iho displays in the horse and cattle sections, and the Peninsula can always bp depended on for a fine showing in harness horses. .This year's draughts were a particularly good lot. There were three entries in the Clydesdale stallion class, the championships going to Mr W. Cowan's (of Hig-hcliff) Clear-the-way, a fine animal, a three-year-old, sire Royalist, dam Bell, and Mr Cowan's mare Lady, from the same stable, securing the coveted award from a creditable lot. The two-year-old fillies were.a good class, the winner, owned by Mr Taylor, securing the championship in the filly class, and a yearling out of the same mare being placed first among the yearling fillies. In respect to the class for a pair of horses mosb stiited for Peninsula- work, two of the entries were rejected, as in each a two-year-old filly was shown. In the majority of the light-horse classes some excellent competition was seen, and the judges had a lengthy task in going through j all the classes. There were no entries for- j ward in the- thoroughbred stallion class, and only one in the roadster stallion class, this being a nice animal of Mr J. Brown's. A defect in .classification as far as the light horses were concerned applied, in the opinion cf The judges, to the first few classes in this section — namely, the mixing of «• hackneys and thoroughbreds, which classes, the judges held, should have been kept separate. Good rings of shorthorns, Ayrshires, and Alderneys were to be seen. In shorthorns, what was lacking in the number was made up for in the quality of the eritiies, Mr J. Stewart's stock, though lie had not much opposition,^being deserving of all praise, the three-year-old champion bull especially so. In Ayrshires, again. Messrs Hall Bros, made a fine show, though other exhibitors were in several instances successful against them, and in this section the male animals came in particularly for the high opinion of the judges. Messrs Hall Bros', champion bull is an "animal to compare with thp. champion at any show, and it was interesting to note that the decision in this class as to first and second places at Dunedm show was reversed on Saturday at Portobello. In Alderneys some really fine well-bred stock faced the judges, and Mr F. Hellyer's champion bull and cow were both particularly nice animals and in splendid condition. No entries were forthcoming in sheep, and the judge had not an arduous in respect to pigs; while the entries m the dog and poultry sections were rather disappointing. A particularly excellent and tempting display was, however, made in the, competitions for dairy produce, bread, etc., in which the Misses Porterfield covered themselves with credit. During the afternoon the jumping competitions, which were considerably prolonged, proved both interesting and eveiting. The luncheon arrangements for the day were excellent, and the "stewards and other officials were, indefatigable in their efforts to make the show a success. Tho Peninsula Brass Band was in attendance, and enlivened proceedings with some excellent music. The following is the prize-list : — HORSES. Draughts. Judges- Messis W. Blackie and R. Muir.
