BRIGADIER-GEXERAL CAREY. Brigadier-General Carey, of the 18th Royal Irish Regiment, was one of the most conspicuous officers in the Waikato "War of 1863-4. He conducted the operations against the Orakau pa, where about three hundred natives of the Ngatirsaaniapoto, Urewera and Taupo tribes made such a heroic defence against an overwhelming force of British infantry, artillery and cavalry.
