BARON 1 DB THIERRY. In 1835 the baiou laid claim to the sovreignity of New Zealand, and in a note to Mr Busby, then British lesident, he declared his intention of erecting a kingdom there. The baron's intention was founded upon an alleged invitation given to him in England by Hongi and other chiefs, and upon an alleged purchase in 1822 of 40,000 acres in the Hokianga district for a consideration of 36 axes.
