In the guerilla warfare which marked the tedious and protracted suppression of the Hauhau rebellion and the pursuit of Te Kooti, a somewhat novel feature was introduced, by the manufacture of a large number of zinc bullets by the rebels. The pinging whistle of the zmo bullet was soon familiar enough to the soldiers' ears, and afforded a curious contrast to the solid double-bass of the leaden hail plugging among the tree trunks and ploughing the barth around them.
