TEACHERS SALARIES.

At the school social held at Shag Point on Thursday evening the statement was made that that school showed the record attendance for the year for New Zealand, whilst the work of the teachers was of themoat satisfactory nature. In that connection it wae incidentally mentioned that, although both the attendance of pupils and the capacity and industry of the teachers could not be surpassed. tb^_salafies paid now to Mr Mathews and Miss Fleming were far less than formerly. Mr Mackenzie, M.H.R., who presented the prizes, in alluding afterwards to the question of the payment of teachers, said that although all teachers in schools of under 40 pupils had received increases the whole question of dealing effectively with our teachers' position had yet to be handled. He believed that the Minister of Education was desirous of doing full justice, but was interfered with by faddists and Ihose who were not familiar with the subject. Unless tho position of teachers was placed on a more satisfactory footing our schools would ceaee to attract first-class men and women, and the people who would suffer most in consequence would be the masses. It was a scandal that after years of honest, capable, and faithful ■work stioh as was performed by Mt Mathewe and Miss Ferguson th© only reward was reduced pay. — (Applause.)
