THE MN NIOTOTO SHOW.
(By Oxjb Special Repobteb.)
NASEBY, December 15. Perfect weather prevailed for the Maniototo Agricultural and Pastoral Association's show, held at Ranfurly to-day. The association's shows are always well attended, but on this occasion the number present exceeded that at most of the previous shows held under its auspices. Visitors attended itom pretty well all over the district, and the "beautifully fine day made the outing a most enjoyable one. The Waipiata Brass Band was present, and added to the general enjoyment by playing selections during the afternoon. The entries in some sections of the show showed an increase in number, notably in cattle, and in a less degree in draught horses- The entries in light horses were about the same, but there was a slight falling-off in sheep, especially in merinos, which were represented by a solitary ewe. The stock shown came from pretty well all round the district, but some few who have in past years been large exhibitors did not enter the lists, notably Mr R. Charters, of Puketoi. In the .absence of these exhibitors the competition in some' sections was reduced practically to nil. In sheep, for example, r Mr R. ' W. Glendining, of Kokonga. won everything without opposition, and had the honour of annexing Dr Church's' cup for the~second*time in succession, -which makes it his permanent property.- 'In cattle, the best class, was undoubtedly ' the dairy cows. ..The first prise-two-yeariold heifer in shorthorns was a good animal, and was considered the best beast in this section of the" show. In Ayrshire cows, one of the two animals was not purebred, and the opinion expressed was that she should have beert shown among the dairy cattle, where she would .probably have won. The Ayrshire bull was a very fair animal, but in fat. cattle there was nothing special. The bullocks were fairly well fattened, and the prize-takers in cows and heifers were exceptionally' well finished. The only strong class in sheep was the halfbr-eds, and the competition all round was fair. Thougir the animals shown were, generally speaking, good enough," the "competition in fat sheep should have been greater in such a district. English and Border Leicesters were fairly good classes, and the wool in the case of store sheep was very good. In draught horses, the competition in entires, any age, was pretty close, F. Carmichael, of Naseby, taking first and championship with Gold "King, by Silver King, out of Nancy. The-, champion mare, owned by Sharkey Bros., of Giminerburn, was by Macaulay, .and was of a" high class. The three-year-old- fillies i - were above the ordinary, and the first-prize ! two-year-old filly aiad yearlings were. gcod. j Draughts as a, whole may be regarded as j a very good .section of the "show, the animals being, invariably of good quality,- and a considerable 'improvement on what has been seen in past years at shows in the district. Light horses formed a' large section of the show, anJ some good animals were brought into the ring.- The thoroughbred stallion winning was a fine specimen, but one entered was" not in his right class. The first and second prize-takers In hackney stallions were ako very good. Five good animals Were ringed in the list hacks, and the same number and equal in quality were placed before the iudge in the list class. Both these were really tip-top — in fact, the winners were good enough to compete anywhere. The single buggy class was fairlygood, but the double buggy class was not up to-a-high standard. Ladies' ■ hacks were not too good. A point in connection with the light horses is that competitors are inclined to show animals in too many classes. Ib might be good in one class, while it could not bs expected, to win in another. Mr Scott's duties were not onerous, swine being represented by a solitary sowThere- jwero a few implements on the ground, nearly aU - being of - the small and portable character.^ All the officials worked- harS to ensure ' success, and their ' labours were well repaid.- They may take credit ,to themselves for having, taking the show all round, surpassed their preyious' v *efforts v following is the., prize-list : — CATTLE".
