BOATING DISASTER AT TIMARU.

TEMARTJ, December 16. The anniversary holiday passed off well as regards sports, picnics, etc. The weather was fine till afternoon, when a heavy squall, with rain, came on. A squall struck a couple of fishing boats in the roadstead — one a good-sized sailing boat, the other a small open boat with a mast. In the larger boat were Christopher Gruhn and Harry Harris, fishermen. The boat was driven ashore, and struck Patiti Reef, a few hundred yards from the beach. Gruhn sprang overboard, but Harris sat fast and cut away the mast and the boat drifted. Gruhn struggled a long time in the water. Efforts made from the shore to save him failed, and he sank. After some time a boat from the harbour, about a mile away, came up and rescued Harris uninjured from the boat, but the occupants were unable to find Gruhn' s body. The other boat, which was quite unfit to stand heavy weather, contained a Scandinavian waterman named Johneon and two young lads named Mills. Nothing has been seen of them. The oil launch went out and searched till dark, and the search will be continued at .daylight. Grave doubts are entertained as to their safety.

Nothing has been seen of the man Johnson or the Mills boys, or of the boat which •went amissine fwm Thnaru on Fiiday.
