CANTERBURY
On Saturday last, at Christchurch, in the test c?se Pcjioe v. Fuller, to decide whether playing euchre for drinks in publichouses is gambling under th-e new, Licensing Act, Mr Haselden. S.M.. held that it was not legal, and convicted duller, imposing a nominal fine of ss. In his judgment he says : " I have been asked to recognise that the game of euchre may be" played in the customary way to decide which of a number of persons consuming liquor should pay. Ido not feeMustified in going as far as that, but I anrWrdined to believe that the Legislature intended. inter alia, to prohibit this game as likely to lead to excessive drinking. Believing that the object of the act was to stop gambling in' hotels, and that the playing for a stake-^ i.e., drinks — is gambling, I must convict. The case will probably go to the Supreme Court.
