SLUICING AT ST. BATHANS

The secretary of the Dunedin Stock Exchange received the following wire from the secretary of the Vinegar Hill Sluicing Company on Monday afternoon: — " Startling and phenomenally rich wash struck by Vinegar Hill SluicT.ng Company, SI. Bathans; 9dwt 9gr to the dish." The Vinegar Hill Hydraulic Sluicing Company has a capital of £6500, consisting of £1 shares fully paid up, but 500 of these are unissued. The previous return from this claim was 720z for the fortnight ended 25th ult., while the one previous to that was ltiOoz for a five weeks' run. At the time of reporting the 160oz return the secretary stated that had the paddock been cleaned the return would have been a good deal larger, as there were indications of a considerable quantity of gold in it. The wash, which in some places was Bft thick, was exceptionally rich, and the gold could be seen thickly studded all through it. Some of the directors recently paid a visif to the claim and carefully tested all the layers, of wMch there were several, and were unanimously of the opinion that with such rich and consistent prospects good, substantial dividends can be expected by shareholders at an early date. The announcement of the telegram on .'Change yesterday naturally created a slight stir, and an inquiry was made for the shares at 15s, but without response. * ~j
