THE NOBEL PRIZES
LONDON, December 10.
The Nobel prizes for this year have been awarded to Lord Rayleigh for his researches in the field of physics and to Sir William Ramsay for his in that of chemistry. °
The late Dr Alfred Nobel, inventor of dynamite, left a considerable portion of his immense fortune to constitute a fund the interest from which is awarded annually in the shape of five prizes of £8000 each to those persons who during the preceding year have contributed most materially to benefit the human race. These substantial prizes are awarded for the most important discoveries or improvements in (1) physics, (2) chemistry, . (3) physiology or medicine, (4-) for the most distinguished work of an idealistic tendency in the field of literature, and (5) for the best effort towards the fraternity of nations ,and the promotion of peace. The. physios and chemistry prizes, the decisions respecting which are now to hand, are awarded by the Swedish Academy of .Sciences at. Stockholm ; the prize for physiology or medicine by the Caroline Medical Institute of Stockholm; the literature prize by the Stockholm Academy ; and the peace prize by a committee of five ©elected by the Norwegian Storthing.
