WESTERN DISTRICT SHOW.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
INVERCARGILL, December 7.
The twenty-fourth annual shew of the i "Western District A. and P. Association was held in Mr R. Foster's paddock, Thornbury, to-day. The paddock was an ideal one for the purpose, and adjoined the railway station. The weather was splendid. Although the gate takings were not up to the usual, there were a lot of people present. The show was an unqualified success, and ther'entries in sheep and cattle were more than double thess of the last show, while horses showed a marked increase in the number of entries. /The entries for the various classes were: — Horses, 138; cattle, 102; sheep, 124; pigs, 7; dairy produce, 41;— ' total, 412. The Western District is famed for its stock; and for a country show, taking the evenness oi the exhibits in all classes, the present one would be hard to beat. Draught horses held pride of place, and the champion ticket in stallions went to Mr J. Noble's Shepherd King, and the championship in mares fell to Mr W. Blakie. In the light horse section there were some large rings, and the competition was very keen. In the high jump Fitzgerald's Circus horses gave, a gpod exhibition, and eventually won. In cattle, shorthorns and Ayrshires were best represented, while The. display of fat stock was "excellent. In sheep, Mr J. B. Sufton had it -all his own. way in Lincolns,. . and Mr J. S. Grieve in Downs ; while the other classes found more exhibitors, and the honours were divided.. The dairy produce stall was a "good one, the ticket for new cheese going to the Waiau Factory. Mrs A. Lindsay proved herself a most consistent butter-maker, winning the .prize ha four different- classes. The management of the show was very good, and the duties of secretary were most ably carried out by Mr B. Hancock. The following is the prize list:— ' -' HOESES. Draughts. Judge: Mr Jas.
