The Cod Winked.

"In my 'pinion," said Wally the Whaler, "the cunnin'est fish afloat is the Murray J ood. He ain't called a cod for nothin". I j was fishing down there below 'Chuea one J lovely afternoon, "n the water was as clear as whisky. I could see my hook down in the depths. Presently 'long comes a big ' buck cod. He nosed the bait for a moment ' anxiously, then got on to the top of the hook, then came right up the line, nosin' it all the way, till his chivvy bobbed out o' the water. Then he looked at me with a sort o' 'just-what-I-expected' expression on his countenance, 'n when I caught his' eye he winked! 'Twas the slyest, oldestfashionedsst wink I ever struck. It satisfied me. I threw away my line, 'n I've never fished for cod since."
