"Oh, mother, dear," said fhe languishing Claribel, "Augustus is coming this evening to try over a song with me ! You don't mind, do you?" "Not at all!" purred Mrs Smyth. And at about 8 o'clock that evening Augustus arrived, bearing a formidable roll of music.
Clanbei ushered him into the drawing room, and thenceforward' all was silence. ° Mamma sat in th& room adjoining and listened; but no sound of music struck on her ear. And that was the situation for more than an hour.
"Clanfael," called Mrs Smyth at last, rapping on the wall, "I thought you were going to^practise a song with Mr Manners?" "Yes, ma," came the muffled voice of her daughter from the next room ; "we've been practising for. over an hour." "I did not heai you. What was the name of the song?" " 'Whisper and I shall hear.' mamma, dear I" cooed the captivating Claribel. I
