TAPANUI FARMERS' CLUB.

THE ANNUAL SHOW. (By Otjb Special Repobtke.)

TAPANUI, December 9. -President, Mr J. -Davidson; vice-president, Mr r. Sim, jun. ; committee — Messrs W (Jullen, J. Cleghorn, A. M'lntyre, G. H. Stewart, H. Howat, D. L. Brack, D. Fleming D. Dickison, acnU J. M'Dufi; secetary, Mr R Rodger. ' '

The Tapanui Farmers' Club held its thirtieth annual agricultural show at Tapanui to-day, when there was a large attendance of the public, over 1000 people being present during the day. The weather was very warm and oalm, until about 3 o'clock, when a strong wind sprang up and the sky became overcast, and bad weather threatened. About 4 o'clock there was a very heavy shower, and about 5 p.m. a steady rain set in. The entry lists all through showed a satisfactory increase in all classes, with the exception •of the dairy produce section, where there was a slight f aliing-off from last year's total. But the section last year was abnormally large. The draughts totalled 54-, as against 50 last year ; the light horses and competitions 102, as against 6* ; cattle 22, as against 17; sheep 37, as against 22; and dairy produce 166, as against 182. There was a marked improvement in the quality of the stock classes, and altogether the exhibition was a, most successful one. The strongest feature was the draught horse section, in which some magnificent rings appeared. The weather during the past month has not been too favourable for sheep, and this section lost somewhat in wool points, and there would -probably have been more entries, but sheep-owners are hurrying on the shearing.

The merino section induced only one entry, a ram shown by Mr R. Elliot. This animal was a well-bred sheep, with good, strong, combing wool, and of a stamp for breeding good, nuggety sheep, but it was a little out of condition. There was a better entry in Lincolns, and fair competition. Mr R,. Elliot showed two rams in the aged class, and his champion animal was one of fine frame, but the wool was not of such good staple. A very nioe even pair of ewes with lambs at foot, well matched and in good wool, was shown by Mr Elliot ; and two ewe hoggets in the Lincoln class, shown by Mr M. Ferguson, were noticeable for good wool and fine frame. There were no Border or English Leieestcrs forward. In the Downs class two very good Shropshire lams were exhibited by Messrs Quin and Rodger, both giving evidence of so\md breeding strains. The same exhibitors had two nice ewes, with lambs, forward, and the lambs were particulai'ly good 1 . The Romney class was not very noticeable in point of entries, but the ram shown by Mr J. Davidson displayed good breeding, with very fine body and even fleece — a fine specimen of the Romney type. Two rather good one-shear rams were shown by Mr J. B. Logan, who also had two nice ewo hoggets forward. These hoggets were especially good all through. The crossbred hoggets were a grand class. Mi* I>, M'Rae

had a well-matched pair of splendid quality ] on exhibition, and Mr M. Ferguson secured a first for two good wether hoggel3 of fine fleece, with the wool in splendid order. The crossbred ewes, with lambs, shown by Mr J. Davidson in the first and se-cond prize pens were noticeable for good fra.mes and fine fleeces. The halfbred hoggets were of splendid quality all through. Mr R. F. Kirk was first in the ewes and Mr Davidson in the wethers. The. first lot of fat lambs were of beautiful quality, and the freezers were good. Cattle were not very strong numerically, but the shorthorns were good, and especially in the any-ag© cows, but the j best cow was accidentally overlooked. The j dairy cows showed very fair quality, but j the Ayrshii-es did not call for any special j mention. The first aged shorthorn bull was j noticeable for good frame and fine neck and head. The draught horse's showed j splendid quality all through. There were two aged entires 'forward, and the first prize, and also the championship of the show, was awarded to Mr W. Haugh's Glenleary, a beautiful light grey horse, which was fifth at the last Dunedin horse parade. Glenleary was only recently purchased by Mr Haugh (Crookston) from Mr H. H. Clark, of Barnego, and was bred by Mr W. Gardiner, of Papakaio. He stands 16hd 2in, with splendid bone and symmetry, and is rising eight years old. He is by Oedric the Saxon, by Crown Prince, and his dam is Jean Armour, by Lord Haddo. Glenleary and his famous half- ! brother Record Reign were both famous J prize-takers. The second prize horse was another well-known prize-taker — namely, Mr ! C. F. Dunnet's Salisbury Champion, a fine bay horse by Lord Salisbury, out of Rosie, by Wallace (imp ). There were two three-year-olds forward, and the first prize went to Mr J. R. Mackenzie, of Pomahaka, for his horse Here I Go, a bay colt foaled in i 1901, by Herd Laddie out of Maggie, by Lord Salisbury. Here I Go was second to Twecdside at the Gore show last week, i Five hoxses entered the ling in the two- J year class, and the pride of place was I secured by Mr R. Hagen's Glen Lomond, j by Glenkenich, out of a Ben Lomond mare. This horso has taken five first prizes. Messrs Fleming Bros', horse by Dalmuir Princo was placed second, and Mr J. Stewart's third-prize horse is by the same sire. The brood mares were an exceptionally good class all through, though enly four were forward. The first award, and also the- championship, wont to Messrs Fleming Bros. Lady Victoria, by Alexander's Heir. Mr Haugh secured second for a mare by . the same sire, and he also took third for a mare by Lord Lyon. The dty mares were also a grand ring, and Mr D Fleming carried off the honours with a fine dark bay named Queen, by Wallace (imp.), out of a • Glengarry mare. Mr J. B. Sim showed a I fine three-year-old filly, but his was the \ only entry in the three-year class. Seven two-year fillies faced the? judge, and formed a fine ring, and eight yearling fillies were , shown. The geldings were a "good lot all through. The special award for most points in draughts went to Messrs Fleming Bros., with 28 points, Mr Haugh coming next, with 2* points, which was a reversal of the j position of last year. In thoroughbreds the class for any-age entire was represented by two horses. The first award went to Mr T. B. Mortimer's His Lordship, which was first and champion at Gore last week. His Lordship is by Catesby, out of Her Ladyship, by Rama Rama, one of Mr H. ! Redwood's horses. The second horse was , Mr A. Keir's Cannon Ball, by Chainshot, ' by Musket. Mr J. O'Dowd had one very nice little mare, forward. The weightcarrying hacks were very numerous, and the 15-stone and 11-stone hacks were remarkably good rings. Unfortunately there was some delay over the judging, and it was very late, and heavy rain was falling, ' when the last classes were being judged. The dairy section was very well filed, and the quality of the exhibits won high praise from the judge. Following is the prize- i list: — CATTLE. Judge: Mr D. Murray (Watepa).
