OAMARU NEWS NOTES

(From Otto Own Coerespojtdent.) OAMARU, December 7.

Ai the meeting of the committee of tho North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association, held to-day, the society's rough balance sheet showed an estimated credit balance on the recent show of £166 10s, though th© prizes were considerably increased and the revenue from the implement stands showed a substantial shrinkage. The committee voted the sum of £10 10s to the Mr Thomas Brydone Scholarship Fund. Th&r© are likely to be at least three candidates for the mayoralty at the next election. Councillors W. Wadclell, W. H-. Frith, and R. Milligan have all expressed their intentions of standing.

A fresh scheme is being put forward for a theatre In Oamaru. Mr H. B. Crawford is asking that those interested should advance him £2500 to £3000 by way of mortgage on debentures, which will be used to erect a theatre to seat 1500 on a municipal heetiou hold by him. H© estimates that the revenue will be sufficient to pay 4£ per cent, interest on the outlay and to establish a sinking fund. The entries received up to the present for the summer school total 370. The date fixed for closing the entries, Bth December, was only fixed for convenience, and it is expected -ihat enrolments will continue to come in for a week or more yet. The Mai! says that a report current for th© past few days that the Totara Estate had found another owner has foundation only in the fact that a Canterbury settler has been in negotiation with the Land Company for some time, but nothing definite has yet transpired.

Welcome rain has fallen pretty well all over North Otago during the last few days, freshening up the crops and feed very^ much. Provided the cold winds have now all passed rh© season should be a very favourable one.
