WELLINGTON NOTES.
Bt Onlookbb.
December -10.
.. Lissa has been engaged m the Hack Hurcile events at the Wairarapa Racing Club's meeting.
The Manawatu Eacing Club has notified bookmaker-owners that they are at liberty to withdraw their nominations before the weights appear, but not afterwards, and that they will not be permitted on the course. The Feilding Jockey Club passed a similar resolution, hut made an exception in the case of one ownei. The Woodville Jockey Chtb allowed two owners on to see their horses run, and kept "three of^. The position taken up by the Manawatu Eacing Club is a fair one.
The Woodvihe District Jockey Club had a most successful meeting on Wednesday and Thursday last, when the new course was used for the firjst time. A large number of invitations were issued, which attracted visitors fiom Wellington, Napier, and other districts^ This to a great extent accounts for the large increase in the totalisator turnover, which nearly £6000 more than last year. The course was formerly seven furlongs lound, and had two bad itums. Several horses had their careers terminated while racing on the Woodville track. The new course is a mile round, with good turns. The new stewards' stand, with offices for secretary, clerk of scales, and press, was badly svanted, and, therefore, all the more appreciated. Last week's meeting marks the turn in the tide of the club. The Hon. J. D. Ormond. whe had several horses racing at the meeting, and Mr J. M'Vay, president of the Napier Park Eacing Club, were among the visitors at the meeting. "
The Australian-bred colt Trephine was the best backed of 12 "Maiden candidates. The colt held his own for seven furlonga, and. cam© fourth. Lyrist, by The Officer — Lyre, was also well backed, but made no show at all. The Wanganui-Owned Domestic, by The Workman. — Myrtle, won comfortably at the finish. Sh paid £15 7s. Her owner held nine of the 31 tickets in the machine. The place-getters (Victoria Park, by Sylvia Park — Lorelei, and Whakawhei, by Daunt — Queensborough) should both win races before long. First View, by Tasman — New Year, won the Scurry, in which event Fisher Maid, by Fiske — Waltonia, and The Seer, by Turquoise — Vision, were placed. At half a mile the latter looked all over a winnei. First View finished out of a place in the Maiden. He was placed third in a similar class of event at Feilding. After the nice stake secured at Feilding, the owner of Joe Chamberlain was satisfied to miss the Woodville meeting, although he accepted with the Bonnie Scotland horse the first day, and Hv.es only a few miles from Woodville. xiie only other withdrawals from the big handicap were Armistice, who wa? taken home after Feilding, and Trrole, who started in other events. Loch Erne, who was strongly supported on his Auckland form, was never in it, and finished last. Starshoot, looking b'g and bright, failed to see it out. Sunfish was then in charge, until Douche headed the Wairara.pa Cup winnei at the distance, and won nicely. Douche, by Jet d'Eau — Cartouche, was bred by Mr Gcdan, and is fullsister to Hydrant, who ran in the same race. This was her first appeal p.nee in open company. She was ridden by the Porirua lightweight, A. Oliver. Douche went up a stone the second day, but did not accept. Th© C'arterton mare Jeanne v Arc, by St. Andrew — Montdread, took chaige at the bend, and came in by herself. Black Reynard was knocked about on the rails, and came fast m the straight, Lut had no chance of catching the winner. W. Brown came up to ride Jeanne re at the Mastertoii and Carterton meetings, but the heavy going there appeared to settle her chance. Sunfish ran a good fourth. Eapa has turned out a great disappointment. Favoured with a light weight. G. Price took him to the front, but he had had enough after going six furlongs. Ngatarua ran a good race es«h day. It is smgu.ar that on both days he was beaten by a member of The Workman — Variety family, to which Apprentice belongs. On the first day Variation made a runaway race of ihe Grand Stand Handicap. On the second day he was foitrth in the Stewards' Hack, -when Fancy Work beat" Kgataiua.
The Gisborne horse Morpeth again let his •upporters down in the Hack Hurdles. His stable mate Vivacity has- broken down, which is probably the reason Morpeth was relied upon. Athol Maid ran up to her Carterton form, and scored nicely from Anadeja. On the second day Good Hope enu*d his career ■when he fell. Dug. Watt got a severe shaking, tut had no bones broken. The field included 3tungarawa and Reptilse, neither of which started on the first day. Rungarawa and Athol Maid got the worst of a straggling start, «tnd were never in it. Domain, by Sylvia Pairk — Kalmea, is evidently on the improve. jWhen he came at Repulse, who is not the best of finishers,. it looked as, if the latter would go under, but he kept going, and made some amends for his two defeats at Feilding. Catspaw is very well at present, and if he liad not been nearly bumped over the rails ton the second day he would have won with his 10.3. On account of the support given Eraiahad one of Stuart Waddell's team, Cats£aw paid the good price of £4 18s. When he fcan second he - was paying £2 5s to _ win. Maminga, by Petroleum — Listener, was in reteipt of nearly four stone. • Admiral Cerveras, by Mousquetaire— Violet, a. winner at Carterton, was sorted out as the best oi good things for the Welter. He won 5n really good style, but was not brought out on the second day. Creusot made his re- - .appearance on -the first,-day. Carterton form mointed to Polyanthus as having a good chance on the second day. She gotchopped out at the start, and was mever ,in it! Hoity Toity, who was fourth on the -first day, bolted in, and paid £15 9s. I/etherin, "who was second, would have paid £63 9s had she got home. " The Merrie England mare Platypus, who had aot sported silk for 12 months, made her reappearance in the Railway Electric Handicap. She scored in her best style, and paid £6 19s. On the second day she got well away in the ORailwa-y Stakes, but failed to see it out. Narcotic, whose only appearance it was at the meeting, was favourite, but could only get third \> the light-weighted Rustique (by [Recluse— Motto), who was the absolute outeider, and paid £20 13s. Eusuqme ran fourth in the Borough Handicap the previous day, -tout most people thought it was Wet Reef which filled that position. The latter was (Last. The four best backed candidates for the Borough Handicap failed to get either first or second. That wasjiow Full Cry and Black {Reynard paid such prices. . Full Cry scored nicely in the High Weight. Tirole looked all over a ™n*er at the , turn, but died away, and finished fourth. _ Although S favourite, Full Cry paid the nice price of One 'thing the club needs.to make its meetings up-to-^ate ,is the -starting machine. Mr ChevatmesTwho making his first appearanc^Tthe meeting, was successful without it, considering that in most races he had large fields to handle.
