PALMERSTON AGRICULTURAL SHOW.

Officials. — Piesident, Mr J. Muir ; vice-presi-dent, Mr J. S. Miller; secretary, Mr W. M'Gregor; auditor, Mr W. H. Fielder; field steward, Mr James Ross; committee — 3Jessr3 R. Cameron, E. H. Clark, A. Fleming, C. Gillespie, A. Gillies, M. Isbisrtcr, A. Kilgour, F. Lef>.vre. F. M'Allnm, W. M'Kellar, A. M'K«rrow, D. M'Leod, D. Miller, H. O'Xeill, J. Ormsby, D. M. Philip, W. Pollock, ft. Riddle, W. Robertson, D. Ross, James Ro3s, J. Sloan, W. Sourer, and T. J2. Stenhouse. Exceptionally fin© weather prevailed for the twenty-fourth annual show of the Pahnerston and Waihemo Agricultural and Pastoral Association, which was held on the association's grounds at Palmerston on Friday. As s. result the attendance was very large, visitors coming from far and near, and the takings at the gate amounted to -JB4-7 17s, which is a record. The grounds, prettily situated close to Palmerston, presented quite a bright and animated appearance, and everything passed off in a most satisfactory and successful manner, and without grumble or complaint of any kind. Judging commenced about 11 o'clock with the cattle, biifc owing to the extent of ground' to be covered was not wholly completed when the train left Palmerston at 5.30 p.m., and consequently three or four classes are not included in the prize list, which appears later on. In cattle the entries compared favourably with last year's, and the largest prize-takers were in shorthorns Mr T. Muir and Mr D. Miller, both, of Shag Valley; and in Ayrshires Mr P. Ireland, of Waikouaiti, and Mr P. Walker, of Oamaru. Mr J. Ross, of Kartigi, had it all his own way in polled Angus, and won without opposition. Shorthorns were better thanhave been seen in the Palmerston show ring for the past two years, and it was ani unfortunate circumstance that Mr Ross's polled Angus were not shown in competition, as they would have taken some beating. The Ayrshires were a good class, and the same might be said of the dairy cows*among whioh were some really useful animals. Draught horses were somewhat less in number than last year, but many ot those shown were, of fine quality. The championship went to Clydesdale Laddie, by Herd Laddie out of Belle, owned by Mr E. Lcfevre, of Palmerston, Clydesdale Laddie beating Mr A. Beaton's Conqueror, which took first and champion at the recent? Dunedin show. The two-year-olds were at very good class, and the mares were a/ very good ring, the champion wet mare fully deserving her place. The first and! second two-year-old fillies were both good, and there was not very muoh to choose* between them. *The yearling fillies may betregarded as fair only, and the rest do noff call for special comment. Light horses

was a very numerous class, as is generally tne case at country shows, and it was in. tms class that the prize list could not be completed., though the judges got over the ground wonderfully well once they 6tarted. -Ine first prize brood mare, though small, ■»a$ a remarkably neat animal, and the Sarat prize dry mare showed good quality. The 13sfc hacks was a fairly showy class, and 'Mr A. S. Orbell's horse had not by any aaeans a walk-over in a ring of 11. The class for the best pair of buggy horses protraoed three good pairs, and those shown by aVlr Challis, of Palmerston, were, after some consideration, placed first. Ladies' hacks was only a medium class, the first prizetaker showing somewhat better quality and manners than the others. Sheep were somewhat less in point of- number than previously, but of good enough quality, though they showed the • spring weather had not ween favourable for exhibition purposes, the ■wool being a little "weathery." Border lieicesters stood out by themselves, and tvere generally particularly good specimens. Neither Lincolns nor merinos were numerous, but very fair quality was maintained. Messrs J. Ro3s, of'Kartigi, and D, Ross, of Palmerston, were by far the largest exhibitors— in fact, they met with hut very little opposition in 'of- the sheep sections. The competition in dogs was fair, fcufc only four exhibits in- pigs reached the showground. There was a good .though not extensive display in dairy produce, - th© most points for which were obtained by Mrs -Belcher. ~ A number of " fowls were penned, and a few ducks were shown. Some sundries, such as hams, bacon, -bread, cakes,, 'scones, fruit, , c"to., completed a very comprehensive list of exhibits. 1 A word of praiss is due to the management for the manner in which the show w.as carried out, and the visitors were indebted to them for making the -show as attractive as possible. It must not be forgotten to make mention of the Ealmerston Brass Band, which' played during the afternoon. The following is the prize list: — CATTLE. Shorthorns. Judges: Messrs J.
